26 Weeks

On Tuesday, we reached 26 weeks. We're really close to the 3rd trimester now! The babies are about the size of eggplants right now, hehe.

Here is what happens during the 26th week:
Your baby's eyes — which have been closed for the past few months (so that the retina, the part of the eye that allows images to come into focus, could develop) — are now beginning to open. What this means is that your baby is able to see what's going on now (unfortunately the view in your uterus isn't all that exciting). But do try this at home for kicks (baby's that is): Shine a flashlight at your stomach. Your baby might kick in response (as in: "Get that light out of my eyes!").

The iris, the colored part of the eye, still doesn't have much pigmentation (that'll fill in over the next month or two), so it's too early to start guessing your baby's eye color. Even the color your baby will be born with might not be the permanent shade; so you may be kept guessing until your baby is close to six months old.

Look what else is going on this week: Your baby's brain-wave activity is kicking in, which means your little one can not only hear noises but can now also respond to them. Not in so many words, of course, but with an increase in pulse rate or activity.

We had an ultrasound on Thursday, which went well. Unfortunately, the twins weren't very cooperative, so we didn't get any pictures this time. They're little troublemakers already! They both seem to be growing right on track; twin A weighs about 2 pounds, and twin B weighs about 2 pounds, 4 ounces. It's hard to believe they're that big already! Both of their heartrates were in normal ranges, around 140 bpm for twin B and 150 for twin A.

I had a 3 hour glucose test this week to test for gestational diabetes. Luckily, I passed, so that's a big relief. At each appointment, they measure the height of my uterus and let you know how far you're measuring. Right now I'm measuring the equivalent of 35 weeks, almost 10 weeks ahead! I guess having twins will do that to you! Here's my big belly as of 26 weeks:

Today we went shopping with Kirby's mom and got some cute clothing necessities for the twins! I think that about covers this week. :)
